Shree Gauri Sawant’s life was one of resilience and determination. Born in Pune, she tragically lost her mother at the tender age of 7 and was raised by her grandmother. At 14 or 15, she made the brave decision to leave home to avoid disappointing her father, a police officer.

In the year 2000, Gauri founded the Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust, a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting safe sex and providing counselling to transgender individuals. Her selfless work aimed at uplifting the transgender community garnered admiration and respect from all quarters.

Shree Gauri Sawant made history when she was the first transgender person to petition India’s Supreme Court for the right to adopt transgender people. Her trailblazing efforts paved the way for greater recognition and acceptance of the third gender in the country.

A testament to her compassionate nature, Shree Gauri adopted a girl named Gayatri in 2008 after the child’s mother passed away due to AIDS. Through this act of love and kindness, she showcased the true essence of motherhood, transcending societal norms.
